The major function of the Society is to enhance the relationship between the University and its emeritus faculty for the benefit of Washington State University’s land grant mission and for the greater welfare of its emeriti. The Society serves as a point of contact between the University and its retired faculty, coordinates the delivery of services to the retired faculty, and provides opportunities for retired faculty to continue their scholarship and service at the University

Legacy of Excellence Award

The Emeritus Society Legacy of Excellence Award is given to an outstanding emeritus who contributes to academia, the University, the community and mankind while in retirement. The award is presented annually at the Showcase Retirees Reception in March. To nominate someone for this prestigious award, download the Excellence award nomination form.

$500 Scholarships for Undergraduates

Deadline Extended: The deadline for the WSU Emeritus Society 2021 Scholarship Awards has been extended until March 9, 2021.  Please access the most current application in the link above.

The WSU Emeritus Society Undergraduate is pleased to announce the 2021 Excellence in Undergraduate Scholarship and Research Award! Undergraduate students who submit an abstract for SURCA (Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities) are eligible to apply for an Emeritus Society Undergraduate Research Award. This year, the WSU Emeritus Society will grant five awards of $500 for undergraduate achievement, one each in the following areas: arts, humanities and creative activities; physical sciences and mathematics; biosciences; social, economic and behavioral sciences; and engineering and applied science.  The awards will recognize significant contributions to research and outstanding creative and scholarly achievements by.  If interested, you can access the application here: WSU Emeritus Society 2021 Scholarship Awards.

Note: It is a requirement to submit a project to the 2021 Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) in order to qualify for the Undergraduate Research Award.

Emeritus Society Legacy of Excellence Award 2020

Dr. Don Matteson, Professor Emeritus

The 2020 recipient of the Emeritus Society Legacy of Excellence Award is Dr. Don Matteson. Matteson became the first WSU faculty member to win the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship. Since his retirement in 2012, Matteson has remained an innovator in the field of synthetic organic chemistry and has advanced the development of a life-extending drug for patients with multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells.

Emeritus Development Fund

Gifts donated to the Emeritus Development Fund will enable the Emeritus Society in reaching our goals to engage and assist with the mission of the university.
